Are trade unions out of date?

Do you think the United States still has a need for trade unions? (For more information about trade unions, follow this link to Wikipedia)

  • I think there is probably a need for unions in some aspect. I do think they need to be regulated.

I worked in a union environment once and people that did not work as hard as me, got paid higher wages and had more benefits just, because they had been there longer. So, sometimes unions hender advancement and stability of hard working employees, but also the employer because it makes it harder for them to terminate less productive employees.

  • My husband is in a union because the company he works for requires it. At the end of last year the union decided that he had been in the union long enough to advance to the next level. The union did nothing to get him a raise, more benefits, a promotion, nothing - all they did was double his monthly dues. Lots of help that was!

  • My father, uncle and many cousins were or still are in a union. I think unions have served their purpose by helping establish clean safe working environments, and now feel that OSHA can take care of that issue.

In my former life as an HR rep, I even had training on how to keep a workplace from going union. It's a huge headache for a company.

  • Unions, well I have never had to deal with them. I think that they can be good and bad. They can be good b/c they require certain standards, better pay(sometimes) and other stuff. On the other hand, they can be bad b/c they do not fight for everything an employee needs. They strike, etc.

I have no idea about unions that was just my observation and I am done rattling. I have lost all trains of thought right now!
